SUMMARY:Cha-Time #38: “Post-Colonial Vernacular Modernism in Southeast Asia: Insights and Reflections in the Era of Climate Change"
DESCRIPTION:This topic will be discussed in two rounds of Cha-Time\, each with four speakers. Each speaker is asked to provide brief but sharp answers to the question to trigger further discussion: “What was vernacular modernism in your country\, and how did it reflect the post-colonial era’s changing political\, economic\, socio-cultural\, and environmental conditions?” Each speaker would be asked to select one to three architects from their respective country and their works as examples. Modern should be defined as from post-World War 2 (early national independence) to the present day. Vernacular should be understood as the climatic and environmental wisdom\, knowledge\, and solutions in terms of materials\, techniques\, and typologies – and not about style.\n\n\nVenue: Online via Zoom\nDate: April 26 2025

SUMMARY:Cha-Time with SEACHA#34: The Preservation of Cultural Heritage through Sound
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 23 at 14:00 Bangkok time for Cha-Time # 34\, “The Preservation of Cultural Heritage through Sound”. The Southeast Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance invited Ms. Sirasar Boonma of Hear & Found to share her insights on this topic.\n\n\nAs a field recordist and sound designer\, Ms. Sirasar Boonma (Mae) is passionate about capturing the sonic tapestry of indigenous cultures. Her work explores the intersection of sound\, environment\, and community. Through Hear & Found\, she strives to preserve these sonic treasures and empower communities to share their stories.\n\n\n\nHear & Found is dedicated to preserving and celebrating diverse soundscapes\, from everyday noises to indigenous music. They empower communities to document and share their sonic heritage through field recording workshops and an online sound archive. By fostering a culture of listening\, Hear & Found aims to deepen our connection to the world around us.\n\n\n\nThe conversation will be moderated by Ar. Andy Hasegawa\, SEACHA Youth Representative and Heritage Conservation Society Trustee\, an architect and educator in architectural history\, with Masters education background in History\, Theory\, and Criticism from University of the Philippines Diliman.\n\n\nRegistration for the talk is required. SUMMARY:Cha-Time with SEACHA#33: Impact of Large language models (LLMs) on Heritage & Culture
DESCRIPTION:Cha-Time #33 will be on Saturday\, 14 September at 2:00PM Bangkok time! It will tackle the topic of “Impact of Large language models (LLMs) on Heritage & Culture”. \nGenerative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is artificial intelligence that generates text\, images and videos. Many of us use GenAI chatbots such as ChatGPT in our daily lives and work. Countries around the world are also developing sovereign AI using large language models (LLMs) that will allow GenAI to be more relevant to their local contexts and interests. \nLLMs are a type of AI that uses machine learning algorithms to manipulate and process human language. Ingesting massive collections of texts\, LLMs can now be used for translation\, to predict and analyse text\, and to generate content. In the heritage domain\, these powers present great new opportunities\, to analyse and learn from large-scale archives\, yet they also present difficult questions of representation\, authenticity and fairness. \nWe have invited Peter Schoppert\, publisher at NUS Press and a subject matter expert on GenAI to speak on the pros and cons of LLMs\, and how to navigate the challenges around such models particularly in the Southeast Asian context. The conversation will be moderated by Ng Kah Gay\, publisher at Ethos Books\, who will be connecting Peter’s sharing with concerns relevant to the fields of heritage\, history\, and culture. \nRegister through the QR code on the poster or through this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0qcOqgqjIpHdTLwihoVQQ0wZDUJ5Qj1MY8
